March News 2020
We are only a few short weeks from Spring – YAY! I know it’s been a long winter but hang in there!
We have lots of events happening in March and April. Read on and don’t miss out on getting plugged into all the exciting resources we have to offer this Spring!
Are you looking for a natural approach to strengthening your immune system during cold and flu season? With the mounting concern surrounding the coronavirus, many patients have asked me what they can do to strengthen their immunity. Even though the CDD recommends the flu shot, studies show that this year’s flu vaccine is only about 40% effective and it does not protect against coronavirus. The flu vaccine also contains numerous fillers and preservatives that can create the immune system to over-react and cause side-effects. For this and other reasons, some people opt to not get a flu shot and instead take a proactive approach to improving their immune response. Here is the protocol I use with my own family to help keep our immune system healthy and robust during cold and flu season. Everything on this list can be purchased at the office and is safe for nearly all ages (please know that dosages vary by age). Please consult with a provider before implementing any supplementation.
- Vitamin C – 250 mgs 2-4 times daily
- Fish Oil – at least 2 grams daily
- Multivitamin – an “insurance policy”
- covers a multitude of important fat and water-soluble vitamins
- Probiotic – use a broad spectrum with at least 25 billion CFUs
- Vitamin D3 – 5,000 IUs daily
- Turmeric — 400mg-1 gram daily
- Water: Drink half your body weight in ounces (make sure your water is filtered)
- Anti-inflammatory diet (no gluten, no dairy, no sugar, no refined oils, no caffeine)
- 8 hours of sleep a night
I’ve been asked to be a guest speaker at Door County Breastfeeding Support Group on Wednesday, March 4. I will be discussing the importance nutrition and supplementation can have on a healthy and successful nursing relationship. This presentation will highlight current research on postpartum nutritional needs for breastfeeding mothers. There will also be time to discuss any questions or concerns that you have in your current nursing journey. If you or someone you know might be interested in this event, please join us! The DCBSG meets every 1st Wednesday of the month at Moravian Church in Sturgeon Bay from 11-1. It’s free and open to nursing or expecting mothers. I highly recommend this support group run by Julie Neuchter! Hope to see you there with your nursling!
Our Spring Detox is coming in April – are you ready!? Detoxification is one of the most crucial functions of our body. Over time, due to poor detox pathways, we can become overburdened by the effects of not eliminating waste and toxins properly. This can lead to inflammation, weight gain, pain, and disease. Nearly everyone is a candidate for our semi-annual physician-guided detoxification program. Let us help you get back to being you with this incredibly successful program! Please see the attached information about our Detox Program coming next month. We are excited to be rolling out modifications and updates to the program including our all NEW Optimal Detox Package that contains nutritional counseling and additional formulations. We have already started to sign patients up so make sure to grab information at the front desk and follow us on Facebook for additional updates (and make sure to tell a friend or two)!
Mary, our Registered Dietician, will be presenting “The Sweet Danger of Sugar” on March 19 from 6-7pm. This is a follow-up to the Sugar-Free February event that we promoted in the office last month. She will be covering the importance of eliminating sugar and the profound impact it can have on health (and sickness). This is an excellent opportunity to understand how to get a handle of sugar if you are someone who struggles to kick the habit of sweets.
